Job Title: Shelter Manager

Ministry: Saint Martha’s – Shelter Program

Reports To: Senior Program Director

Saint Martha’s is a St. Louis nonprofit program that provides shelter, resources, and compassionate care for women and children experiencing domestic violence. Our programs include shelter services, a drop-in center, and community education. As a ministry of Catholic Charities of St. Louis, we are proud to share in their mission, vision, and values.


Saint Martha’s. Safe places for women, for children, for good. We provide immediate and long-term support to women and children in crisis, and we do so from a base of love. We believe the responsibility to end domestic violence is a community effort and we work to spread awareness and resources so more women can live free from violence. We do not believe domestic violence defines the women we serve; instead, we celebrate the strength and resilience of women’s lives. The staff, board and volunteers are dedicated to empowering women and children to start new lives free of violence.


POSITION SUMMARY

The Shelter Manager, using a trauma-informed lens, drives implementation and coordination of Saint Martha’s shelter program, under the general direction of the Senior Program Director. In cooperation with the Senior Program Director, this position is responsible for the overall operation of the shelter program to achieve optimal results to care for those entrusted to our care. Implementing policy, procedures, and providing supervision to shelter Advocates ensures that the mission is continued effectively and efficiently.


OVERVIEW & RESPONSIBILITIES

Human Resources and Responsibilities

• Supervise, direct, support, and evaluate Advocates in the shelter in the performance of their duties

• In collaboration with the Senior Program Director, provide overall control and direction of the personnel function of Saint Martha’s

• Facilitate the interview process, orientation and training of all new Advocates in the shelter

Program Implementation and Development Responsibilities

• Ensure effective implementation of shelter policies and procedures

• Facilitate and participate in staff meetings


KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor degree in related field or four years of experience in social service or related field, preferably within the domestic violence movement. Ability to supervise people, organize, plan and implement activities/programs appropriate to further ministry goals. Must have a driver’s license, car and automobile insurance.


SKILLS REQUIRED FOR SUCCESS IN JOB

Positive leadership skills, most importantly the ability to empower others to lead. Demonstrated ability to coach and develop the professional skills of Advocates. Ability to gain confidence of and establish good relationships with the individuals we serve, volunteers and community representatives. Utilize a framework that promotes the equality, dignity and full humanity of all persons by working for social justice. Empathetic to the adversity and challenges others may be enduring. Understanding of diverse populations and ability to work with and learn from others outside of their own culture. Willing to collaborate and make decisions as part of a team. Flexible and adaptive.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Demonstrated passion for the purpose of Saint Martha’s. Dedicated to a future where domestic violence is no longer a threat to women and their children. Knowledge of or willing to learn the dynamics of gender-based violence and intersectionality, and the community's response to violence against women. Ability to work with a variety of people under stressful situations. Understanding of how human diversity, i.e., race, culture, gender, religion, spirituality, age, and disability, impact women and children who experience abuse. Understand and utilize healthy boundaries. Committed to the integrity of our history, policies. Ability to prioritize tasks. Good written and verbal skills.


Understanding of and comfort with working in a residential environment that operates 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. Some evening and weekend hours will be necessary.
